Operating context

The environment

A distributed organization needed to replace aging firewall hardware while improving the consistency, visibility, resilience, and future readiness of network security across locations in the United States and Canada.

Technical leadership designed and managed the modernization program, including platform standards, configuration patterns, lifecycle sequencing, management and logging requirements, connectivity dependencies, validation, and handoff.

The challenge

Why the work required a connected approach

Hardware replacement alone would not resolve inconsistent configurations, fragmented visibility, failover gaps, or site-to-site connectivity requirements. The program needed a repeatable architecture that could accommodate legitimate location differences without creating a new generation of one-off deployments.

The modernization connected asset lifecycle, security policy, network architecture, centralized operations, carrier dependencies, and rollout readiness. Locations moved through a controlled process with standardized configurations and documented exceptions.

Connected workstreams

Several disciplines moving through one operating plan.

Lifecycle and readiness assessment

Mapped equipment status, supportability, circuit conditions, site dependencies, operational risk, and implementation readiness.

Configuration standardization

Defined repeatable policy, interface, addressing, VPN, administrative-access, and documentation patterns with controlled location exceptions.

Cloud management and logging

Improved centralized visibility through cloud-managed operations and logging requirements that supported troubleshooting and security review.

Resilience and future readiness

Integrated secure VPN connectivity and LTE failover while preparing the architecture for broader SD-WAN use.

Results and operating value

What the work made possible

  • A more consistent firewall architecture across U.S. and Canadian locations
  • Improved lifecycle visibility and a repeatable replacement process
  • Centralized management and logging for stronger operational awareness
  • Secure VPN connectivity, LTE failover, and a clearer path toward SD-WAN
